SPINAL PROCEDURES

  • Laminotomy
To relieve the pain experienced on the back, involves the removal of a part of the lamina, body arch or posterior wall of the boney spine located on the dorsal surface of a vertebra.
  • Laminectomy
Involves the removal of the entire posterior wall of the boney spine (lamina).  This is done to ensure added space to this part of the spine.
  • Hemi-laminectomy
To relieve back pain while preserving integrity of the spine where possible.  The procedure entails removing only a part of the boney spine (lamina) that is the right or the left portion of the posterior wall.
  • Discectomy
A discectomy is performed in order to remove the herniated disc from the spinal canal and relieve pain as well as possible nerve disfunction.
  • Flavotomy
There is a protective covering all along the posterior aspect of the spinal canal. This covering is known as the yellow ligament. There are specific cases whereby this covering becomes excessively thickened and causes dysfunction of the spinal cord or nerves (including pain). In these circumstances removal of this ligament becomes necessary to alleviate your symptoms. It will involve most times the realization of a laminotomy or laminectomy.
  • Foramenotomy
To alleviate the symptoms caused by foraminal stenosis. The foramen, which is the cavity where the spinal nerves cross when they leave the spine narrows leaving the possibility of leading to neurological symptoms; the nerves gets pinched which provokes numbness, pain and it weakens the muscle. This procedure relieves the pressure on the nerve. It consists of the removal of the bone and soft tissue that overlie the foramen.
  • Foraminectomy
The surgical removal of a large amount of bone and other tissue. An example would be opening the foramen widely in order to free the passage for a nerve, to remove constriction, and to gain access to a herniated disc which is to the side (outside) of the spinal canal. The foramen is the natural passage or tunnel between the vertebrae of the spine through which a nerve root exits from the spinal canal on its path to a specific tissue or organ. When this foramen becomes narrowed, the nerve can become irritated or dysfunctional.
  • Facetectomy
The spine is also unique in that it has supportive hinges (facet joints) which allow us to be able to perform all types of motions along the axis of our spine such as flexing, extending, rotating, side bending and of course a combination of these movements. These facet joints (hinges) also function as part of the roof of the neural foramen (windows) and with time can develop spurs and pinch the nerves that exit from them.
  • Laminoplasty
This procedure is done from the back of the neck and is designed to make space for the spinal cord of the cervical spine (upper or neck region). It involves reconstructing the canal to ease pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
  • Spinal Canal Decompression
There are instances whereby the spinal canal of a distinct portion of the spine is narrowed to a point that several vertebral levels need to be decompressed (make space for by recreating the canal). This may involve a combination of the procedures listed above and are recommended on a case by case basis.
